HACCP, Food Safety and Salon Hygiene: QCA Accreditation

The Royal Institute is pleased to announce that all our food safety and HACCP qualifications, and also our Certificate in Salon Hygiene (Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy) have been formally accredited by the regulatory authority, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

Accreditation provides assurance to candidates, employers and training centres about the quality and 'fitness for purpose' of the qualifications. It also makes clear their status within the National Qualifications Framework and ensures that they are eligible for public funding through colleges and other officially approved training centres. The process of accreditation of other Royal Institute qualifications is proceeding.

Royal Institute Examinations Manager, Tim Davies, said "I am delighted that the Royal Institute has received renewed accreditation for its hygiene & safety examinations. I am especially proud that our Advanced Diploma in Applied HACCP Principles, launched in 2001, is the first and currently the only level 3 HACCP qualification to receive QCA accreditation".

World Water Day: 22 March 2001:

The John Snow Society moves to the Royal Institute of Public Health

Senior public health professionals and water specialists celebrated the move of the John Snow Society to its new home at the Royal Institute of Public Health at a special ceremony on Thursday. The ceremony formed part of an event to promote Water and Health – this year’s theme for World Water Day and was supported by Thames Water.

The John Snow Society aims to promote the life and works of Dr John Snow, the anaesthetist and pioneer of epidemiological method, who famously removed a water pump handle in Soho, London, where he identified the source of the cholera epidemic in 1854. This act that has become an enduring symbol of public health interventions.

To mark the Society’s move to its new home at the Royal Institute, the ceremony began with Professor Paul Fine, Honorary Pump Handle President, presenting the John Snow Society water pump handle to Dr Michael O’Brien, Chairman of the Royal Institute. Dr Rosalind Stanwell-Smith, gave a short history of the 1854 cholera outbreak, and Dr Julian Dennis, of Thames Water spoke about the work of Thames Water and their long term support for the charity WaterAid. Sir Donald Acheson, President of the Royal Institute was presented with Honorary Membership of the John Snow Society.

Commenting on the event, Nichola Wilkins, Chief Executive of the Royal Institute said: "As a long standing, multidisciplinary, public health organisation, the Royal Institute has always been closely concerned with the public health aspects of water and we very much welcome this opportunity to extend our work in this area and to promote the work of Dr John Snow."

RIPH Launches New HACCP Diploma

The Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH) launches its new Diploma in HACCP Principles and their Application in Food Safety at today’s FoodTech 2000 exhibition.

The new qualification has been introduced in response to demand for a higher level qualification and training progression route from the popular Royal Institute HACCP Certificate.

In particular the new Diploma targets:
  • Auditors of HACCP systems
  • HACCP trainers/advisers
  • HACCP team leaders and members
  • Owners/managers of food businesses
The qualification conforms to the national Training Standards produced by the HACCP Training Standards Steering Group and both trainers and students can be confident that RIPH qualifications meet current guidelines and industry requirements.

Commenting on the new Diploma, Nichola Wilkins, Chief Executive for the RIPH
said "Now more than ever there is a need for greater understanding of HACCP. Our new qualification is geared to the needs of those responsible for designing, implementing, managing and auditing HACCP systems. It is extremely timely given the increasing national, and indeed world-wide, adoption of HACCP systems".

Further information can be obtained from The Royal Institute of Public Health, 28 Portland Place, London W1B 1DE.
